Freezing February…

Blimey, it’s cold! My Small Suburban Garden never looks great at this time of year, but this year it seems to be suffering particularly badly. The jasmine remains determined to bud no matter how low the temperatures go but there’s not much else willing to brave the chill. A few crocuses are beginning to poke …

Wot No Snow…!

It’s 20th December and despite the doom and gloom predicted by the forecasters it’s remarkably sunny outdoors today. Of course, it’s far from sun-bathing weather but nonetheless it’s actually jolly nice. I have a few hardy geraniums still hanging on in there, and the buddleia (as ever) seem to think it’s springtime, along with a …

Brrr…

As predicted, we’ve now had the first snow of 2013, and while other areas in the country are enjoying/suffering the effects of a thick (ish) blanket of the white stuff, here in Colchester there seems to be very little to worry unduly about (for the moment…) However, the temperatures have plummeted to zero during the day and …

Happy New Year…

After what seems like an eternity of wet weather, the sun has finally made an appearance (long may it last!) Despite several days of sub-zero temperatures in mid-December the geraniums are still defiantly hanging on in there, albeit with a few brown stems. I’ve been very impressed with them throughout 2012 and will definitely be …

Preparing For Winter…

I took full advantage of a relatively warm, dry autumn afternoon to chop down the buddlia next to my new fence (obviously, using the best offcuts to try to grow new plants for next spring) and out came the Cuprinol. After carefully plugging cracks and knot holes with wood filler, waiting for it to dry …

Lazy Days…

In our increasingly hectic and stressful lives, it’s al the more important to take the opportunity, when it arises, to simply enjoy a lazy late-summer / early-autumn day. This is exactly how I spent today; not weeding or pruning, not sweeping the paving slabs or painting the fence, but just sitting on a camping chair …

Snow, Snow, Thick Thick Snow….

Snow, now, Thick Thick Snow....

Well, the weather forecast DID say it’d snow last night, and they weren’t wrong. We’ve actually been lucky with a relatively mild windter so far, but this past week we’ve been in the grip of a Siberian weather front and it was only a matter of time before the white stuff fell.

Once it thaws I shall have the miserable task of digging up dead geraniums. Oh well….they had a good innings….

Chilly Christmas…

Chilly Christmas...

Winter has definitely arrived, with a bitter chill in the air. I guess it won’t be long before we get a serious overnight frost, so I’ll make the most of the lobelias, geraniums and pansies while I can. Despite the cold, we’ve still had no significant rainfall for months, and I still have to brave the cold to go out and water the tubs and borders on a regular basis…

The Calm Before The Storm?

Much as I’m loving this Global Warming, I’m starting to wonder if this is simply the calm before the storm? Yes, it’s glorious to be outside in the sunshine on 19th November, and the sight of lobelias still in bloom gladdens the heart no end, but I fear that Mother Nature may have a sting …

Spring Has Sprung!

Could it be true? Could this finally be an end to the longest, coldest, wettest, snowiest winter I can ever remember? As I gazed upon the dried up remains of my once lushious jasmine, and stared woefully at the rotten geranium stalks now adorning my terracotta tubs, I suddenly glimpsed a flash of colour at …

Dull and soggy…

It’s difficult…no, impossible… to get enthusiastic about the garden when there’s not even a hint of blue in the sky and everything around you is soggy. Stepping outdoors in the cold, damp weather is enough to drive even the most enthusiastic gardeners back into a cosy, centrally heated lounge. I made a half-hearted attempt at …

Wot, No Birds…?!

There’s a distinct lack of feathery things in my small suburban garden, and I’m left wondering why? I accept that the winter snow, frost, ice and so on would’ve seen numbers fall dramatically, but since we’ve recently been experiencing ‘scorchingly hot’ daytime temperatures of 2-3 degrees above zero I’d have thought that they’d have returned. …
